How to Prepare Your Snowboard for Japan: Waxing, Tuning and Repairs
Flights booked, accommodation sorted and powder turns on your mind? Before you zip up your board bag, give your snowboard the attention it deserves.
Preparing your snowboard for Japan means checking its condition, choosing a suitable wax and sorting out any repairs before you leave. Whether you prefer maintaining your own setup or bringing it into First Tracks Boardstore for a professional service, here’s where to start.
Start with a snowboard condition check
Give your board a careful inspection, especially if it has been sitting in storage since the Australian winter.
Look for:
-
Dry or cloudy patches on the base, particularly along the edges.
-
Deep scratches or gouges from rocks and other impacts.
-
Rust, burrs or damaged edges.
-
Cracks or separation around the sidewalls, nose and tail.
-
Loose binding screws, worn straps or damaged buckles.
A cloudy-looking base can be a sign that your snowboard needs waxing. Any damage you are unsure about is worth having assessed before an overseas trip.
Wax your snowboard for the conditions
A fresh wax helps your snowboard glide, which is particularly welcome when you are trying to keep momentum through flatter sections.
Choose your wax according to the conditions expected at your destination. The wax you used during spring in Australia may not be the best match for colder riding days overseas. Check the manufacturer’s temperature range rather than choosing by colour alone.
Options in our snowboard wax range include:
- Wend MF Performance Wax – Universal: An option for riders looking for versatility across changing conditions.
- Wend Non-Fluoro MF Race Wax – −12°C to −4°C: Worth considering when the expected conditions fall within its listed range.
There is no single wax that suits every Japan trip. Where you are riding, when you are travelling and the forecast all matter. If you are unsure, chat with our team about a suitable option.
Taking a new snowboard to Japan?
If you have purchased a new snowboard for your Japan trip, it is worth considering a fresh wax before you leave.
Most new snowboards come factory-waxed and ready to ride, but that wax may not be the best match for the conditions you will encounter. A fresh hot wax suited to your destination helps you start the trip with your base prepared for the snow ahead.
Wax it yourself with our snowboard waxes and tuning gear, or bring your new board into our Jindabyne workshop for a pre-trip hot wax. Let our team know where and when you are travelling so we can help you choose a suitable wax.
DIY waxing: get the right tools together
Waxing at home is a useful skill, especially if you ride regularly or want to maintain your board between trips.
For a basic hot wax, you will need:
- A snowboard waxing iron.
- A clean cloth.
- A suitable snowboard base-cleaning product, if needed.
- Wax suited to the expected conditions.
- A plastic wax scraper.
- A suitable finishing brush or polishing pad.
- A stable workspace.
Our tuning range includes waxing irons, scrapers, brushes and edge tools. The Anticorp 15cm Wax Scraper and Anticorp Large Wax Buffer Brush are options for building out your waxing setup.
Prefer to keep your maintenance tools together? The Demon Mechanic Tune Kit includes an edge tuner, file, tuning stone, wax scraper, polishing pad, P-Tex and spare binding screws in a carry case. You will still need to add a waxing iron and suitable wax for hot waxing.
When waxing, follow the temperature instructions on your wax packaging and keep the iron moving to avoid overheating the base. Let the wax cool before scraping and finishing the surface. For a more detailed walkthrough, read our guide to waxing your snowboard.
Give your edges some attention
Your pre-trip check should include the edges as well as the base. Look for surface rust, rough spots and damage from the previous season.
If you maintain your own edges, use the appropriate tools and understand your board’s existing edge angles before filing. Avoid making unfamiliar changes immediately before a big trip.
At First Tracks, we offer edge-only servicing and edge-and-wax services. If an edge is bent, cracked or pulling away from the board, bring it in for an assessment rather than treating it as a routine sharpening job. Edge repairs are quoted separately.
Sort out base repairs before you fly
Do not leave those rock hits from the Australian season until you arrive in Japan.
Check the base for gouges, particularly deeper damage or damage close to an edge. A wax will not fill a gouge or repair a damaged edge.
Our Jindabyne workshop offers base repairs, including P-Tex work, with repairs quoted after assessment. Bringing your board in ahead of departure gives you time to understand what needs fixing and arrange the work.

Check your bindings and plan for maintenance
Before packing, check your binding straps, buckles and mounting hardware. Tighten screws according to the manufacturer’s instructions and replace worn or damaged parts ahead of departure.
At First Tracks Boardstore, we carry a wide variety of snowboard binding spare parts, including straps, buckles and hardware. If anything is worn, damaged or missing, visit us in store or contact our team before your trip. Let us know your binding brand, model and approximate year, or send us a photo, so we can check compatibility and availability.
For maintenance during your trip, consider packing a suitable snowboard tool and a compact wax option, such as the Wend Kazu All Temp Performance Speed Paste. A paste wax can be handy for quick touch-ups between hot waxes. Follow the product’s application instructions and check your base regularly throughout the trip.
